When I Originally write this, I wrote that I primarily fished for trout. Then I thought...of the last 50 fies I've tied...MOST have been for smallmouth. Of the last few dozen times I've fished locally...I've mostly fished for and caught smallmouth. Having said that, I would still say trout are my favorite...but I'm not sure about that either. The good part is that a lot fo the time in the boat, its a mixed bag. I'll put it this way...on the spring creek, I catch trout. Primaily brown trout, but I will go out of my way for brookies. Something about them. Perhaps its that they're the only native trout here. Perhaps its because technically, they aren't even a trout. Occasionally, I'll stumble on a rainbow, but they are not biologically suited to reproduce in the streams, so they are primarily a put and take event. I will also target Muskie when the time permits. Lastly, there are suckers and carp. I am not above throwing tiny crayfish or large caddis and stonefly patterns to catch redhorse cruising sandy flats during their spring run. nor can I seem to pass by a rising pod of 5-10lb carp that can be caught on the dry fly without giving them a pitch. If a fish offers me a good challenging cast and a well fought battle to land, count me in.
